The objective of this qualification is to prepare learners for employment in a food business, or to support a current position within a low-risk role, where there is an element of food handling. This could include waiting staff, health care workers, kitchen porters and stock/store room staff.


The qualification can be taken as stand-alone or as part of a wider programme of training and has one mandatory unit to complete.


This qualification has one mandatory unit with four learning outcomes: Food Safety Awareness

Entry Requirements


  • There are no prerequisites for this qualification.

  • This qualification is approved for delivery to learners aged 16+.

Course Duration  : 4 Hours (1 day)

  • Pass mark : 9/15 (60%)

  • Distinction : 12/15 (80%)

Course Content

  • Importance of personal hygiene when in contact with food

  • Importance of keeping work areas clean and pest free in a catering environment

  • Importance of safe waste disposal

  • Responsibilities for food safety

  • Recognise that food handlers have legal responsibilities for food safety

  • How to report food safety hazards to supervisors

  • Identify how food can become contaminated by physical, chemical, allergenic and microbiological contaminants

  • Identify safe food handling practices and procedures for controlling contamination hazards from purchase to service of food

  • Ways to prevent bacteria multiplying and surviving


The exam is conducted via Highfield E-assessment and is remotely invigilated online at your home or your workplace.​

The exam is carried out at a set time and dates convenient to you after you have completed the training, please allow up to 5 working days for Highfield to set up the exam for you, we can arrange the exam date prior to your completion of the training if you have a specific date/time in mind




You will find out if you have passed or failed immediately and will receive an e-certificate shortly after completion which has the same accreditation as a hard copy certificate.
